DELAND CRAVEN

WHAT KINDA NAME IS THAT?

Backstory

Deland Craven

Creative Director, Maker, Content Creator, Swell Guy

I’m a first-generation Californian, but my roots stretch back to Appalachian Ohio and West Virginia. I can likely claim to be a Son of the American Revolution, and there’s even a rumor that someone in my family was a Mayflower passenger. At the end of the day, for better or worse, I’m a typical mutt of European descent—complete with all the pride and guilt that comes with it.

Much like my DNA, my life has been a mix of interests and exploration. I’ve worked in factories, managed retail, started (and own) multiple businesses, volunteered for mountain search and rescue, and even flown a small plane—poorly—a couple of times. I’ve traveled a bit, both in the U.S. and abroad, and those experiences confirmed what Buckaroo Banzai said best: “No matter where you go, there you are.”

For over nine years, I served as a Creative Director at a cutting-edge space technology and Earth observation company. I had the privilege of leading a team of designers and developers, working to transform complex ideas into clear, compelling experiences. I was fortunate to be part of an organization committed to making the world more transparent and informed.

These days, my time is split between parenting two incredible kids, making, side-hustling, and content creation. I have more hobbies than time (or money) and an ever-growing collection of tools. My projects span 3D printing, woodworking, machining, laser-cutting, electronics, photography, videography, and music production. I also code microcontrollers just to see what I can make them do.

The best word I’ve found to describe myself is multipotentialite. I’ve mentored a robotics team, and I teach design, programming, and web development at the local junior college and high school. My philosophy on tools? Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

I'm happiest when I'm creating and when I have the opportunity to share my passion for making with others.
